Scientists should focus on protecting people against both current and future coronavirus variants when developing the next generation of COVID-19 vaccines, according to two infectious disease experts at Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital.

Cambridge Health Alliance, a community health system serving Cambridge, Somerville and Boston’s metro-north communities, named Siva Vithiananthan as its new chief of surgery.

The researchers collaborated with Boston Children’s Hospital to bring the Huggable to pediatric patients and their families with the goal of mitigating the children’s stress, anxiety, and pain.

“I very strongly believe that we need a vaccine for adolescents and children, but I want to be sure that the risk of the vaccine is lower than the risk of hospitalization” from covid-19, said H. Cody Meissner, an infectious-diseases physician at Tufts Medical Center.

“Across the nation, there are too many people for whom vaccines still remain out of reach.”
