The Domestic Violence Council was created by COBTH member CEOs in 1995 to address the issue of domestic violence. After studying multiple aspects of this serious public health problem, the Council made a series of recommendations on how:
- COBTH member hospitals could raise awareness at all levels of their institutions about domestic violence;
- COBTH could enhance collaboration among member hospitals and community agencies as well as strengthening partnerships and communication.
The Domestic Violence Council includes representation from 8 COBTH hospitals, 6 community-based domestic violence and sexual assault programs,
3 city and state departments, and 2 colleges and a statewide coalition.
The Domestic Violence Council members recognize that health care is an important part of the continuum of care for victims and survivors of abuse. Yet, the most effective strategy to address domestic violence is to build strong partnerships with a variety of organizations, systems and communities.
To that end, the group is open and includes members beyond hospital personnel.
After 13 years, the Domestic Violence Council continues to be a vibrant and active group with monthly meetings. Agendas include discussions about current trends in the field, research, training and most importantly the needs
of survivors of violence. Outside of regular meetings, the DVC engages in activities
to promote outreach and awareness. In 2005, the DVC was awarded Jane Doe Inc. Spirit Award for community leadership. This past year, the DVC held
an information table at the Mayor’s Office “New Bostonian Day” to provide resources about domestic violence and sexual assault. The DVC also sponsored and participated in the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center’s “Walk for Change!”
